Review: Sustained by Emma Chase

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

How to Chaperone a One Direction Concert (Without Killing Someone)
by Jake Becker

1. They sell beer at the concession stand. Drink it responsibly, but definitely drink it. It’s the only thing that gets you through the night.
2. Don’t be that guy acting like he’s having a good time. It won’t make you look “cool” - just @$#!$# creepy.
3. Be ready to catch. Whether it’s because of hyperventilating or the simple sight of One Direction, some girl in your vicinity is going to pass the hell out.
4. Make sure you have extra memory on your phone – because apparently when their phones are filled to capacity with pictures – Hara-kiri will then commence.
5. Earplugs.
6. Earplugs.
7. Earplugs.
8. Park far, far away because then you’ll actually be able to get out of the parking lot when the concert is over. And you’ll risk less damage to your car - these are teenage girl drivers we’re talking about here.
9. Remind yourself that your parents probably couldn’t stand the music you listened to as a kid either. This proves that karma is real and that she is, in fact, a bitch.

My Review:
Where do I even start? Sustained was fantastic. The Legal Briefs is fast becoming one of my favorite series. This book is all in Jake's POV and let me just say, Emma Chase writes male POV like no other. Absolutely hilarious and most likely exactly what a man is thinking.

We met Jake in Overruled, he works as a defense attorney in the same office as Statnton, Sofia and Brent (who gets his story told next). Jake gets a shock in his office when a girl, whose name he can't quite remember, lets him know that along with a break-up, her boyfriend left her with an STD. Yikes.  After Jake gets all his tests done he puts himself on a little self-imposed "dating" regime..

“So…what’s the typical schedule with the whole dating thing? How long before one gets to the actual fucking?”
“Three dates,” they all answer simultaneously.
My eyebrows raise. “Three dates? Seriously? Are you guys, like…more religious than I ever knew?”

He gets his wallet stolen by a kid named Rory, and when he takes him home instead of calling the police, he meets Chelsea McQuaid. Chelsea is aunt-turned guardian to six, six nieces and nephews after her brother and his wife were killed in a car crash. Each of the kids has their own unique personality that makes you fall in love with them.

“I want her – this fearless, stunning woman. And I want the kids. Those perfect, awful, amazing children – whom she loves with every inch of her soul. I want them to be mine. Mine to hold, mine to protect and teach. Their joy, their laughter, their love. I want to come home to it, bask in it, be the reason for it.But even more than that, I want to deserve them.”

Sustained was everything I was hoping for. It was a quick read. I laughed out loud more times than I could count. It hit me right in the feels. I daresay I liked this one even more than Overruled and I absolutely can't wait to see what Emma comes up with for Appealed.

"You’ve got this whole knight-in-shining-armor vibe going on.”
I shake my head. “My armor was tarnished a long time ago, Brent.”
“A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.”

Review: Overruled by Emma Chase

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs Series.

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

***
Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.

***
What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

My Review:
If there is one thing that I absolutely love about Emma Chase, it's the way she writes the male POV. Overruled starts in Stanton's POV after he has the shock of a lifetime and finds out he got his high school sweetheart Jenny pregnant. He wants to do the right thing and give up his dreams of college to help her raise their daughter, but she refuses. We get glimpses into the next few years of what their long distance relationship looks like. Basically they agreed (or more like Jenny insisted) they have an open relationship, but when they're together, they're together.

“In third grade I thought I loved her - by sixth grade, I was sure of it”

Fast forward ten years and we get Stanton who has made a name for himself as a hotshot defense attorney from DC. Enter Sofia, who works with Stanton and they have an agreement. Basically no strings attached sex that they both seem fine with. Until the day that Stanton gets an invitation to Jenny's wedding. A wedding he feels the need to stop at all costs. See, while they've had an open relationship for the past 10 years, Stanton has always imagined that he and Jenny would eventually get married. They have a daughter and have loved each other since they were kids, makes sense, right? Wrong.

Stanton decides he needs to get down to Mississippi and stop the wedding at all costs. And while he has these grand plans to get Jenny back, he asks Sofia to com with him. Why? Because the thought of her with someone else just doesn't sit right with him. Sofia agrees but isn't so gung-ho about helping Stanton get another woman.

Enter me realizing that Stanton isn't perfect. WHAT. I know his accent would make me forgive him a thousand times, but by the time he got to Mississippi his selfish side really came out. He wanted his cake and he wanted to eat it too. He was realizing his feelings were getting stronger for Sofia, but he was still actively trying to get Jenny back. Sofia was a pleasant surprise. She was such a strong character who was also trying to deal with her growing feelings for Stanton, while he was going after another girl. I don't know how she did it, I would have thrown something at someone.

"What if I told you I had to have you again? Feel you clamping down around me so hard I see heaven. That I can't stand the thought of not fucking those hot, breathy sounds out of you, until you scream my name? Would you let us do that one more time, even if it's the last?"

One thing that I really loved was the side characters! Jenny's grandma? Amazing. Stanton's brother? Freaking awesome. I was so sad by the end of this book because I didn't want it to end. Emma created a story that you won't forget. I can't wait for the next book, Sustained, which by the blurb sounds so. damn. good.

Surprise Cover Reveal: Appealed by Emma Chase

Blurb:

When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate - and prized - parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Christian Louboutins.

Brent has never let the loss of his leg in a childhood accident affect his ability to lead a fulfilling life. He sets high goals–and then he reaches them.

And now he has his sights set on Kennedy.

***

When Kennedy looks at Brent Mason, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell.

She’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore - she’s a DC prosecutor with a long winning streak behind her. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case and she thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out that way.

Because every fiery exchange has her wondering if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. Each argument and objection only makes him want her more. In the end, Brent and Kennedy may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

APPEALED is a sexy, humorous romance about first crushes, second chances and the final verdict of the heart.
